Pilot AI pre-checks of social benefit applications
Public authorities have AI pre-check entitlement to and amount of social benefits
Fits: Office, administration & casework
If it works: incomplete applications are spotted immediately, supporting documents are requested earlier, and case workers receive pointers to inconsistencies and a prepared calculation. Today this is at pilot stage: AI checks completeness here and there and reads supporting documents, but there is not yet a reliable AI pre-check of entitlement and amount in regular operation.
Is this for you?
- Your authority wants to become a pilot partner or prepare early for such systems, e.g. for housing benefit (Wohngeld), subsistence assistance or education and participation benefits.
- You have many similar applications with long processing times, and a large share of them arrive incomplete.
- Management, data protection and the staff council are prepared to back a limited pilot with stop criteria and a fairness check.
Never put real applications, decisions or social data into an AI assistant. Instead, use the template below to compile which authorities are already piloting AI for benefit applications, and check whether they are checking completeness or really entitlement and amount.
How to go about it
- Disclose the pilot’s purpose and check criteria
- Assess the legal position before the pilot starts
- Check test applications for gaps and bias
- AI points things out, the case worker decides
- Inform applicants clearly
- Evaluate fairness after every pilot phase
